Most people think very short term

In any startup, one can not escape being salesman and maker. And any startup cannot escape scaling up if it wants to be big. I am facing classic scale up issues now. Yes, it is little early to do that but then we have chosen a field that allows us that. Hiring is so much fun because it is really a challenging task. I have spent hours pouring over the best way to do it but when tire hits the road, it is every time a refreshingly different experience.

Initially i went to Elance and contacted scriptwriters to make them interested in our offering. I believed that i had to do it early enough so that when the time is right, I would already have talent ready. I could not be more wrong. I spent countless hours to discuss with scriptwriters and pour over various ways to make them interested. Every scriptwriter I met bragged me about his or her qualifications and awards awarded. But when it comes the time to do the actual work, the reality came out. My business case was to offer customer free script because customers felt much at ease to buy our services if they have taken part in the creative process. My plan was to hire an army of scriptwriters to make these scripts. To make them a part of the deal, I offered to pay $50 for each script if the customer decided to buy services and only $5 otherwise. My hope was that scriptwriters would do a great job to earn $50. Also this was lower than the market rate, but since there would a steady volume of the work, they would earn more. In my first meeting, I did not mention this plan. Writers contacted me and had chats lasting hours, telling me all sorts of things. Few months later when i had finally the work and informed them about my plan, hell broke loose. As soon as i mentioned money, they would blurt out their expectations which were pretty high at the first place. They would be outraged and stop listening. It was a great experience. It taught me people are really shortsighted. I am shortsighted. It takes effort to see things in the future. Long term thinking is very essential to build things.
